|BPA Free Plastic Water Bottles Now in Nike Apparel|
Nike is using recycled polyester in its sportswear products by melting down recycled products, like BPA free plastic water bottles, to produce new yarn. The yarn is then converted into fabric to create high performance apparel. Nike claims their process reduces energy consumption by an estimated 30% compared to manufacturing virgin polyester.
Products featuring high levels of recycled polyester include Nike's Elite basketball shorts (100%) and jersey fabrics (96%). The uniforms are made using an average of 22 recycled plastic water bottles.
Nike has also developed a new technology that gives athletes the most lightweight shoe yet. Whereas traditional footwear manufacturing processes use a number of materials and cuts, Nike’s new Flyknit shoes use special yarns knitted together to create one lightweight, form fitting upper.
Using knit materials from unlikely sources, Nike is working to “design out waste.”
